Trail camera thief

After the close of deer season about a month ago, I went into the woods to pick up my trail camera and download the last pictures. When I got there, this is what I found:
Someone had tried to steal the camera by cutting the cable and even tried destroying the lock by shooting it.  Needless to say, I am very thankful for investing in a security box and a Master Lock Python Locking Cable. I had hoped the camera had caught the thief, but unfortunately the memory card had already filled up. The camera did snap these pictures, including a nice one of the three-legged buck:

  1. I like those camlockboxes. You can bolt them right to the tree. Obviously this won't work on public land where you usually can't do anything to harm the trees. However on private land if you have permission to do it, it works great. The person would have to cut down the tree above and below the camera to get it, and then haul that chunk of wood out of there with the camera.

I am too paranoid to put a camera on public land at all. I'm afraid someone will show up with some boltcutters and go right through the python cable.

I notice your info strip doesn't display moon phase or ambient temp. Does it have the ability and you just turned that off, or no ability? I'm thinking of getting one of these cams, but expenses keep coming up. In the meantime I've been fiddling with my moultrie D55IR which doesn't seem to function too long on its C batteries. I'm trying AA lithiums with C size plastic sleeves for now, which seems to actually work better than the regular C alkalines. I also turned the resolution way down and the video completely off though. Gonna try turning vid back on next week I think.

  2. Hi terriergal- Thanks for the comment. The cam was on private land, but the farmer gives a lot of people permission to hunt it. It has now become to crowded and I probably won't hunt it much this year. Luckily, we have found a friend that is giving us permission to hunt on his 40+ acres, and it is barely hunted.

The trail cam I have does not have the ability to record moon phase or ambient temp, although these capabilities would definitely be helpful. I chose it because it has a long battery life (my 8 AA lithium batteries lasted 6 months and it was taking about 300 pictures a week), is small, has night vision, has a fast trigger speed, and is very reasonably priced (~$140 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039UW6KU?ie=UTF8&tag=my201urbbowhu-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B0039UW6KU). Best of luck with your Moultrie and your hunt this year!
